What's the real value behind UNMODERATED remote user testing?

We have to be honest: We were very surprised and quite puzzled when we read a recent discussion in the IxDA forum the other day. The topic was about new remote usability testing tools and a well-recognized and highly respected member of the User Experience professional’s community labeled Unmoderated Remote Usability Testing (URUT) as ‘Voo Doo measurement techniques’.
